Mahsha Amini, 22 years old, was visiting Tehran with her family when she was arrested by the special police unit responsible for enforcing the strict “dress code” for women. Police said Amini and other women were detained to be “instructions” on the dress code. Two hours after she was taken to the police station she “suffered a heart attack” and was taken to hospital.

“Unfortunately, she died and her body was taken to the morgue,” state television reported today.

It is unclear at this time what happened from the time the 22-year-old arrived at the police station until the ambulance picked her up to take her to the hospital.

Earlier, before her death was announced, the Iranian presidency said President Ebrahim Raisi had instructed the interior ministry to investigate the case.

Reformist politician Mahmoud Sadeghi, a former member of parliament, called on Supreme Religious Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to denounce Amini’s death. “What does the supreme leader, who rightly denounced the American police for the death of George Floyd, say about the treatment of Mahsha Amini by the Iranian police?” he wrote on Twitter.

In 2020, Khamenei said that Floyd’s death while in police custody revealed “the true nature” of American leadership.
