The EU is divided over the cap on natural gas: Greece, Belgium and Italy are working on proposals to impose it

In view of the upcoming extraordinary council of Energy Ministers on September 30, in order to reach a decision in Brussels, a very intense background has been formed.

The behind-the-scenes processes in Brussels with alliances around the issue of imposing a ceiling on natural gas have caught fire.

On the one hand, there are countries that are pushing and wish for Europe to move in this direction, while on the other hand, there are member states that are categorically opposed to such a perspective.

In view of the upcoming extraordinary council of Energy Ministers on September 30, in order to reach a decision in Brussels, a very intense background has been formed.

In any case, it is most likely that there will be an agreement regarding the three measures proposed by the European Commission, which are summarized in the forced reduction of electricity consumption this winter, the ceiling on the prices of super-profit companies producing low-cost electricity and the solidarity levy from fossil fuel companies.

As with regard to the aforementioned, only small details remain to be negotiated, a large “thorn” remains and which the European leaders will be asked to manage at their meeting in Prague and also in Brussels in October, is the natural gas ceiling, a measure that will potentially it completely solved the problem.

Countries such as Belgium, Italy and our country are in favor of the agreement, while countries, mainly towards the North, with Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands as an illustrative example, are particularly cautious.

It is noted that the countries in a positive position with regard to this measure are consulting among themselves to elaborate relevant technical proposals on how such a measure could be imposed as the commission has not yet presented any specific proposal despite the fact that there was a clear mandate to this effect from at least 15 countries during the previous council.

At the same time, an attempt is being made to add other, potentially stronger countries to this “alliance”, potentially France as well.

In fact, they push for there to be at least one draft for discussion in the council of ministers, considering that only with the ceiling will there be a solution, while arguing that in fact the existence of only the three measures above will only be able to be managed to protect them consumers and households for this winter and there is no intervention at the source of the problem.

It is a “race” until September 30, but possibly beyond, in order to provide a definitive solution to the problem.
