The head of Kyrgyzstan’s State Committee for National Security is quoted as saying, according to Russia’s RIA news agency, that the casualties are “huge”.

Kyrgyzstan’s border guard tonight spoke of “heavy fighting” with neighboring Tajikistan, claiming that additional Tajik forces and weapons had moved to the border of the two central Asian countries.

In its statement, the border guard says that its forces are still repelling Tajik attacks. The two countries blame each other over who started the clashes in a disputed region.

The head of Kyrgyzstan’s State Committee for National Security is quoted as saying, according to Russia’s RIA news agency, that the casualties are “huge”.

Earlier today, the presidents of the two countries, Kyrgyz Sadir Japarov and Tajik Emomali Rahmon, had ordered their troops to “withdraw” from the border area. It was also announced that a ceasefire had been agreed.

The border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan is regularly the scene of deadly clashes. Almost half of the 970km border is disputed and progress on demarcation has been very slow in recent years. 2021 saw unprecedented clashes between the two sides, killing at least 50 people and fueling fears of an escalation of the conflict.
