Taiwan: Bombed landscape the areas near the 6.9 Richter earthquake – Debris searches for trapped people

Rescue crews are conducting intensive searches to locate those trapped. So far 20 people have been freed.

The areas near the epicenter of the strongest earthquake that occurred are reminiscent of a bombed landscape in southeastern Taiwan. The earthquake occurred at 9:44 a.m. Sunday (Greece time – 2:44 p.m. local time) 86 kilometers east of the Yujing district in Taiwan, while the US Tsunami Warning Center issued a 1-meter tsunami warning.

So far there are no reports of casualties, however there are injuries, and rescue crews are conducting intensive searches to locate those trapped. So far 20 people have been freed.

The first videos and photos show severe damage, with buildings collapsed and roads cut in two.

It is noted that the earthquake was felt throughout the country, with buildings shaking in the capital as well Taipei. The China Seismic Network Center, for its part, announced that the earthquake was felt in coastal areas of the country, mainly in Fujian, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shanghai. The earthquake was also felt in Japan.

The country’s Central News Agency broadcast images of panicked townspeople running towards the building, which was shrouded in a thick cloud of dust.

In addition, the company that manages Taiwan’s railways announced that three train cars derailed at Dongli station in the eastern part of the country when part of the platform roof collapsed. The approximately 20 passengers in the carriages were evacuated.
