Nigeria’s Drug Enforcement Administration announced on Monday that it has located and seized 1.8 tons of cocaine worth an estimated $278.5 million in a warehouse in Lagos. The drugs were destined for buyers in Europe and Asia.
During the police operation, five people (four Nigerians and one Jamaican) were arrested who are accused of being members of an international drug trafficking ring, which the Nigerian authorities have been monitoring since 2018 in cooperation with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

West Africa is a major transit hub for cocaine that is manufactured in Latin America and sold around the world. Last April, more than two tons of cocaine were seized in Ivory Coast, while 9.5 tons of cocaine were seized in Cape Verde in 2019.
In 2020, cocaine seizures worldwide totaled more than 1,424 tonnes, according to data from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
