Pro-Russian separatists of the “Luhansk People’s Republic” will hold a referendum on union with Russia from September 23 to 27

The authorities of Kherson decided to hold a referendum on joining RussiaVladimir Saldo, head of the military-civil administration of the region, said on his Telegram channel on Tuesday.

“Having considered the appeals of public organizations and residents of the region, the leadership of the administration of the Kherson Region decided to hold a referendum on the region’s accession to the Russian Federation. I am sure that the leadership of the Russian Federation will accept the results of the referendum and the Kherson region will be part of Russia, becoming a full subject of the unified state,” Saldo wrote.

Earlier on Tuesday, the District Public Council Peninsula asked Saldo to immediately hold a referendum on the region’s accession to the Russian Federation.

Council members unanimously supported the appeal. According to the chairman of the Public Council, Vladimir Ovcharenko, the appeal is based on numerous proposals and wishes of public organizations and residents of the Kherson Region.

Pro-Russian separatists coordinate to hold referendums in Russian-held regions on union with Russia

Officials appointed by Moscow in areas of Ukraine seized by Russian forces are stepping up concerted efforts to organize votes on union with Russia.

The pro-Russian separatists of the “People’s Republic of Luhansk” will hold a referendum on union with Russia from September 23 to 27, the Russian news agency TASS reported, citing a representative of the deputy speaker of the local parliament.

Russian forces seized the entire region of Luhansk in eastern Ukraine in the early stages of the war, but Ukrainian officials yesterday announced the recapture of a village inside the region.

At the same time, the Ria agency reported that in its areas under Russian control Zaporizhia a referendum on their union with Russia may be held in the coming days.

Denis Pushilin, head of the Moscow-based separatist administration in Donetsk, called on his fellow separatist leader in Luhansk to combine efforts to prepare a referendum on joining Russia.

The Kremlin has not commented on the prospect of these votes, saying until today that “it is a matter for Russian-appointed local officials and the people who live in the regions.”

Strong reaction from Kyiv

Ukraine vowed today to “eliminate” the Russian “threat” after Moscow announced referendums on the annexation of Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine.

“Ukraine will settle the Russian issue. The threat cannot be eliminated except by force,” Ukrainian presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram, denouncing “blackmail” by Moscow motivated by “fear of defeat.”
