Peru: Congress rejects proposal to prosecute Pedro Castillo

Peru’s Congress on Tuesday rejected a motion to prosecute and oust President Pedro Castillo, leaving little room for the opposition leader, a former educator and trade unionist, who is being challenged everywhere by both the opposition and the left. of which he was elected.

Only 46 members of parliament voted in favor of the proposal and 76 voted against it, while four abstained. It took 52 votes to approve and initiate the process of referring Mr. Castillo to trial.

Earlier in the day, thousands of supporters and opponents of President Castillo rallied around the congressional building to protest.

His party’s candidate in this year’s election is Pedro Castillo, the left-wing Perú Libre (“Free Peru”), who has come out in favor of the proposal because of his disagreements with the head of state over his policy. , finally decided to vote against the proposal, seeing in it an attempt at a parliamentary coup by the Peruvian right. After this development, the result was essentially prescribed.

The new president’s popularity is plummeting as prosecutors investigate his associates for corruption. Mr Castillo accuses his opponents and special “financial interests” groups of plotting against him.

The Andean country, which ranks second in the world in copper production, has had five presidents since 2016, three within a week in 2020.
