The 28-year-old man was suspected of murdering an elderly woman and Israel’s prime minister had branded him a “terrorist”.
A Palestinian wanted by the police for the murder of an elderly woman yesterday in Holon, a city located a few kilometers from Tel Aviv, was found hanged in the center of Tel Aviv this morning.
Police had issued an arrest warrant and launched a massive operation to locate the suspect, who they identified as Moussa Sarsour, 28, originally from Qalqilya, a Palestinian city in the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian was found hanging early today on Dizengoff Street, at the corner of Bar Kochba Street, in central Tel Aviv, by a passerby who informed the police.
“The body of a man was found on Tel Aviv’s Bar Kochba Street and the preliminary investigation showed that it is the body of the murder suspect,” police said.
According to media reports, the suspect, a Palestinian laborer who had a work permit in Israel and worked at a construction site in Holon, hit the elderly woman on the head with a heavy object, killing her.
Some eyewitnesses, cited by local media today, said that there was a verbal confrontation between the Palestinian and the elderly woman, during which the young man started hitting the woman.
Last Tuesday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid assured that “the security forces are currently working to identify the terrorist (…) and those who asked him” to launch his attack.
During the night the Israeli army announced that it had arrested eleven suspects in the West Bank, of which five are “accused of complicity in the terrorist attack in Holon”.
Twenty people have been killed in a series of anti-Israel attacks since March.
Since then the Israeli military has increased its operations in the West Bank, mainly in Nablus and Jenin where armed Palestinian organizations are active. Riots with the local population or militants often break out in these operations, and dozens of people have been killed on the Palestinian side, while more than 1,500 have been arrested.
