The police “did their job and found Maria Belen.” I am deeply sorry for her death, this femicide will not go unpunished,” the interior minister said.

A lawyer who disappeared a week ago inside a police academy in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, was found dead on Wednesday, the interior minister announced.

The police “did their job and found Maria Belen.” I deeply regret her death, this femicide will not go unpunished,” Patricio Carrillo said via Twitter.

The body of the 34-year-old woman was found on Casitagua Hill, about 5 kilometers from the police academy in a suburb of Quito, where she had gone to see her husband. The latter, the main suspect in the murder according to the authorities, fled. The case is causing a scandal in the Latin American country.

Reacting—also via Twitter—President Guillermo Lasso, from the US where he is for the UN General Assembly, expressed “deep sorrow” and “indignation”. “Her femicide will not go unpunished and all those responsible will be brought to justice,” he assured.

The main suspect is Herman Caceres, the victim’s husband, an officer and instructor at the ESP (Escuela Superior de Policía, “Superior School of the Police”). He was called to testify two days after the lawyer’s disappearance, but he remains missing. The school has suspended all its activities. Her manager was relieved of his duties.

In Ecuador the indicators of gender-based violence crimes are extremely high. According to the attorney general’s office, at least 573 women have been murdered since 2014.

But this number is probably underestimated. According to the ALDEA foundation (Asociación Latinoamericana para el Desarrollo Alternativo, “Latin American Association for Alternative Development”), 206 femicides have been recorded since the beginning of the year alone.
