Tras meetings with Erdogan and Biden in New York

The British Prime Minister welcomed the deepening of UK-Turkey bilateral relations in recent years, including in trade, investment and defense cooperation.

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss had meetings with leaders of other countries in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Among them were the Presidents of Turkey and the USA.

According to Downing Street, the discussion with Recep Tayyip Erdogan focused on Ukraine.

The two leaders referred to the recent military successes of the Ukrainians in terms of regaining territory and the retreat of Russian forces. Ms Truss delivered the “clear” message that Kyiv “can and will win” and that the international community must support Ukrainian integrity.

The British Prime Minister also congratulated President Erdogan for his role in securing a Ukrainian grain export deal “and for his support for the critical enlargement of NATO in light of new threats,” Downing Street added.

He also welcomed the deepening of UK-Turkey bilateral relations in recent years, including in trade, investment and defense cooperation.

The two leaders also discussed opportunities to further develop their cooperation in clean energy, including nuclear power, as well as advanced defense technology and trade.

In the meeting with President Biden, the two leaders condemned President Putin’s pro-war statements regarding Ukraine. They agreed that the Russian leader’s actions underscore the need for allies to continue to support Ukraine financially and militarily.

Among other things, Mrs Truss informed the US leader of her intention to update the recent Consolidated Study which sets out in detail Britain’s defense strategy, so as to ensure the adequacy of dealing with the “evolving challenge” posed by countries such as China and Russia .

Truss and Biden also discussed the need to end overreliance on authoritarian regimes for energy, technology and supply chains and agreed to boost efforts to increase renewable energy production.

They also referred to other global challenges on which the UK and US are working together, with particular reference to trying to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

On the subject of the Northern Ireland Protocol of the Brexit agreement, they agreed that the priority should be to protect the Good Friday peace agreement.

Ms Truss also had meetings with the leaders of Israel, Mauritius, Lithuania and the President of the European Commission.
