Russia’s ‘provocation’ in Italian elections – Photos of Italian politicians with Putin

by

The Russian embassy in Rome posted photos of Conte, Salvini, Letta and Renzi with the Russian president three days before Italy’s parliamentary elections.

Photos of Italian leaders with Vladimir Putin, quite coincidentally, just three days before parliamentary elections, the Russian embassy in Rome posted on its Twitter account.

“Excerpts of recent History between Russia and Italy. So many memories (!)”, ironically comments the Russian embassy in the caption of four selected photos with the protagonists of the election campaign who distanced themselves from Moscow after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The first photo shows Putin with former prime minister Giuseppe Conte (5 Star Movement), accompanied by the two then deputy prime ministers, Matteo Salvini (Lega) and current foreign minister Luigi Di Maio (5 Star Movement).

Matteo Salvini, a big fan of Putin who has even made T-shirts with Putin’s image, has taken a stand against the sanctions against Moscow, calling them “ineffective and unconstructive”.

In the second photo Enrico Letta, prime minister in 2013, head of the Democratic Party, the main faction of the Italian left, appears with the Russian president.

The third photo shows Putin with his friend Silvio Berlusconi, former prime minister and head of the Forza Italia party. The 85-year-old businessman had visited annexed Crimea but distanced himself from the Kremlin after the attack on Ukraine.

The last photo shows a smiling Putin shaking the hand of Matteo Renzi, prime minister from 2014 to 2016, now head of a small centrist faction.

The post provoked a wave of comments, including that of former left-wing Justice Minister Piero Fassino: “If you didn’t have it in your head to invade a free and independent country, which has never threatened you, you could continue collecting photos with our prime ministers”.
