According to videos posted on social media, crowds of people took to the streets of Dagestan on Sunday to demonstrate against “forced” conscription. At Makhachkala, capital of Dagestan, the security forces do not hesitate to beat women as well.
Dagestan has already paid heavy human cost during the Seven Months War. According to a BBC Russia count, at least 301 soldiers from Dagestan have been killed – the most of any other Russian region and more than 10 times the death toll from Moscow, which has five times the population.
Unauthorized gatherings are illegal under Russian anti-demonstration laws and are rare outside major cities.
