Russia: Kremlin man behind Wagner paramilitary organization

by

Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin admitted he founded Wagner in 2014 to fight in Ukraine – Moscow denies it has “connections with paramilitary organizations”.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Russian businessman and Kremlin man, admitted that he founded, in 2014, the Wagner paramilitary organization to fight in Ukraine and confessed to its activity in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

The Wagner paramilitary organization has been seen for years as carrying out the Kremlin’s dirty work underground in various theaters of operations.

However, the Kremlin denies that it “has a connection with paramilitary organizations”.

In a statement from his company Concord on social media, Prigozhin says he formed the organization to send “capable fighters” to Donbas in eastern Ukraine in 2014.

“At that moment, on May 1, 2014, a group of patriots was born that took the name Wagner Battle Battalion,” the announcement reads.

“And now, a confession (…) these guys, heroes, defended the Syrian people, other peoples of Arab countries, African and Latin American unfortunates, they have become the pillar of our country.”

Yevgeny Prigozhin was accused by Western countries and Russian media of being the financier of the Wagner organization, whose members have been found in Syria, Libya, Ukraine and the Central African Republic.

Yevgeny Prigozhin began his “career” as a supplier to the Kremlin kitchen, an activity that earned him the nickname “Putin’s cook.”
