Historic day for Venezuela-Colombia: The border opened after 7 years – Watch video

by

In a festive atmosphere and in the presence of thousands of people from both sides, a van became the first vehicle to cross the Simon Bolivar Bridge

The president of Colombia described today as historic Gustavo Petro, referring to the opening of the border with Venezuela after years of tension between the two countries. “It is a historic day for the country, the wider region and the American continent in general,” said the Colombian president.

A cargo truck crossed the border Simon Bolivar Bridge bound for the state of Tatsira Venezuela, for the first time in almost seven years. The air connection between the two countries will soon be restored.

Diplomatic relations between the two Latin American countries were only recently restored, as the election of Gustavo Petros to the presidency of Colombia (of the country’s first left-wing president) changed the facts and brought a gradual rapprochement between the two governments.

The two countries’ borders were initially closed in 2015 due to a surge in smuggling from Venezuela and clashes that broke out on the border between Colombian smugglers and Venezuelan soldiers. Tensions flared in 2019 when the Colombian government, in cooperation with the US, attempted to send aid trucks to Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido.

For years, Venezuela has been plagued by political and economic crisis. More than six million Venezuelans have fled their country, and nearly two million of them live in Colombia.
