In an international game with an unknown outcome, Tayyip Erdoğan’s Oriental bargain with the West and especially with the USA seems to be developing, giving a leading role to Greece, which it is using, together with the stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, to blackmail Washington mainly for the equipment.

Today’s agenda of the meeting of the Turkish National Security Council, led by Tayyip Erdogan, is troubling as the Turkish president’s decision after the Cabinet meeting to raise the “Greece issue” to the National Security Council also constitutes, according to diplomatic sources, a further escalation, apart from the aggressive rhetoric and in the field of political planning, creating the framework for his next steps in Greek-Turkish relations.

It shows that as long as Tayyip Erdoğan finds closed doors or counterarguments to his absurdity, he hardens his attitude and his words in every direction.

What is certain is that the difficult position of the Turkish president has worsened even more because of the war in Ukraine, which deprives him of being with both the “policeman and the gendarme” – and sooner or later he has to choose a side. A message that became clear to him during the backstage contacts he had on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where the climate was strongly negative both for relations with Russia and Iran and for the aggressive behavior against Greece, narrowing the margins of Turkey’s “two-faced” foreign policy.

Athens responds to the escalation by insisting on the three-pronged international law, internationalization and vigilance of the armed forces, maintaining its composure but also the self-confidence that is strengthened by the support of its allies. “Against them, they don’t only have Greece, they have the whole of Europe, but also our NATO allies,” the Prime Minister said from the meeting of the Council of Ministers, referring to Turkey.

“Everything Greece had to say it said clearly to the UN. Both for its red lines and for its friendly disposition towards the Turkish people. The other side may monotonously repeat its lies and threats. But she is left alone in this merry-go-round. We remain calm and confident in our clear positions with the force of international law, the vigilance of our armed forces, the support of our allies,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
