“Serbia cannot and will not recognize the expected decision of the State Duma of Russia to annex the territories of Ukraine, where referendums were held, because it respects international law and the UN Charter,” Vucic said.
Serbia will not recognize the annexation of Ukrainian territories to the Russian Federation, the president of the Republic, Aleksandar Vutic, said at a press conference, commenting on the referendums held in the regions of Ukraine under Russian occupation.
“Serbia cannot and will not recognize the expected decision of the State Duma of Russia to annex the territories of Ukraine, where referendums were held, because it respects international law and the UN Charter,” Vucic said.
The president of Serbia emphasized that a possible recognition of the result of the referendums and acceptance of the annexation would weaken the Serbian positions on the Kosovo issue.
“We are defending our own territorial integrity and it is in our interest to defend the territorial integrity of internationally recognized states as well and that is the only thing that is not going to change. These are things that are of critical importance to us,” Vucic pointed out.
Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic on September 25 clarified that Serbia will not recognize the result of the referendums on the annexation of Ukrainian provinces to Russia.
Two days earlier, however, Selakovich himself signed in New York a cooperation protocol for the two years 2023-2024 with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.
Although Serbia officially condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it refuses to impose sanctions on Russia.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the EU has regularly asked Serbia to align itself with the Union’s foreign policy and impose sanctions on Russia, stressing that this is an obligation of candidate countries.
The annoyance in Brussels about Serbia’s behavior is so intense that according to today’s reports of the independent Serbian press, a draft resolution is being prepared in the European Parliament to take measures to force Serbia to follow the policy of the Union. As the newspaper “Danas” reports, in this plan it is proposed to link the continuation of accession negotiations and the provision of financial aid with Serbia’s attitude towards Russia and progress in issues related to democratization, the rule of law and respect for European values. .
