The French health authorities announced on Wednesday that 61,340 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed in the previous 24 hours, the highest number on a daily basis since November 2020, with the total number of registered infections reaching 8,048,931.
The death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic has risen to more than 120,000; 133 patients have died from complications of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, according to data from the French public health service.
The incidence rate is 448 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
With 2,608 COVID-19 patients in hospitals, several districts, including Ile-de-France, where Paris is administratively, reactivated the so-called “white code” to increase staffing and become more beds available in hospitals.
In France, 75.8% of the population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and more than 12 million people have received booster doses. But Jean-François Delfresi, chairman of the country’s scientific council, told the French Senate on Wednesday that some 400,000 patients over the age of 80 had not been vaccinated in the fifth wave. Mr. Delfresi also estimated that a fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine may be needed, given that new variants of the virus with multiple mutations are being identified.
