Russia is the world’s largest nuclear power – Together with the US they control 90% of the world’s nuclear warheads
By Athena Papakosta
Experts, analysts and those who follow the Kremlin closely judge that the Russian president’s threats, Vladimir Putin, is nothing more than a bluff and the likelihood of a nuclear holocaust remains low. Nevertheless, Putin vows to use every means at his disposal to defend his country, Russia.
The United States they warn of catastrophic consequences if the Russian president finally decides to push the button.
The position of the former director of the CIA was also indicative. David Petraeuswho responded that Washington would disband Russian troops if nuclear weapons were used by Moscow.
“We will not get involved in the nuclear rhetoric of the West,” replies the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov denying reports in the international press, which refer to moves, such as the movement of a special train loaded with specialized nuclear equipment, which allegedly indicate that Russia may or is preparing to use nuclear weapons.
On his part, and the United Kingdom makes clear that the use of nuclear weapons by any country would not go unanswered by the West, as a senior NATO official denies that the defense alliance warned its member states of the possibility of nuclear use by Russia, information that was initially leaked to the British Times. But what he does not deny is that he remains vigilant for any change of attitude on the part of Moscow.
At the same time, no comment from the Italian defense minister on the La Repubblica report according to which the nuclear-powered submarine “Belgorod”, the first to carry the super-torpedo “Poseidon”, also known as the “weapon of the Apocalypse”, has sailed for his first… trip to the waters of the arctic ocean.
Russian and US nuclear arsenals in numbers
Russia is the biggest nuclear power worldwide. It has 5,977 nuclear warheads while the United States has 5,428. Together, both countries control 90% of the world’s nuclear warheads. Their arsenal was developed during the Cold War and the Soviet Union bequeathed theirs to the Russian Federation.
In terms of tactical nuclear weapons, Moscow has 10 times as many as Washington, half of whose total of 200 are stationed in Europe. In short, Russia and USA can destroy the world more than once.
Putin’s nuclear “games”.
Nuclear security experts hope Vladimir Putin, however desperate he feels, does not break the 76-year-old taboo after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two cities in Japan destroyed on August 6 and 9, 1945, when the Americans first used the atomic bomb as a weapon, killing 210,000 people.
In the Reuters news agency, senior researcher at the UN Institute for Disarmament, Andrei Baklitsky, explains that “Nuclear weapons are not a magic wand. It’s not something that someone just uses and all the problems will be solved” thereby answering everyone who tries to understand what Moscow’s profit in the war in Ukraine would be if it dared to fire its nukes right now.
At the same time, other analysts note that the mere presentation of its nuclear arsenal can send a message to the West by exerting pressure without using them. And the question that reasonably arises is: what will he do if this trick doesn’t “catch” and he runs out of non-nuclear threats?
