Pepsi will begin receiving the first battery-powered trucks that the company ordered on December 1, as Elon Musk himself wrote on Twitter on Thursday.
Musk unveiled the futuristic battery-powered Semi in 2017, promising that production would begin in 2019.
The schedule changed repeatedly, partly due to a lack of raw materials and parts. Elon Musk had warned that production was going to be delayed further, until next year. However, in August, he revised it, saying it would start at the end of 2022
In another tweet, he insisted that the Tesla truck will be able to cover 805 kilometers (500 miles) per charge.
It is not yet clear how many such vehicles Tesla plans to make available in the US market.
The utility vehicle will cost $180,000, but buyers will be eligible for a $40,000 tax break under a Senate-approved electric vehicle subsidy program.
Pepsi had pre-ordered 100 of these trucks when the prototype was introduced, in order to reduce the costs and emissions of its fleet of vehicles.
During an interview with CNBC last year, the head of the soft drinks and snacks industry, Ramon Laguarta, explained that transportation accounts for 10% of the group’s emissions.
Pepsi plans to use the zero-emission trucks to deliver its products from factories to distribution centers and to retail customers.
