The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), part of the National Health System, continues to examine laboratory data on the course of coronavirus and variants in South Africa.
According to the institute, 22,391 new COVID cases were detected, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3,093,452. This increase represents a positivity rate of 29.8%.
According to the Ministry of Health, 22 new deaths were reported, bringing the total death toll to 90,060 to date.
19,988,045 tests have been performed, both in the public and private sectors.
Regarding the Omicron variant, which is now found in 42 countries, the data show that, since November 8, when it appeared until today, it has prevailed in South Africa by 70%. Delta has now dropped to 26% of cases.
As Mr. Majorkinis mentioned in the information about the coronavirus, the data from South Africa so far have shown that there is an increase in hospitalizations, which may be due to the very low vaccination coverage, but there is no increase in deaths.
