“This is a measure that has only been used in the most serious cases, against regimes that commit war crimes or genocide, such as in Bosnia and Rwanda,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.
Canada has announced new sanctions against Iran’s “murderous” regime and banned 10,000 officials from entering the country “forever”, including many members of the Revolutionary Guards.
“This is a measure that has only been used in the most serious cases, against regimes that commit war crimes or genocide, such as in Bosnia and Rwanda,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.
Iran has been rocked these days by a women-led movement over the death of Mahsha Amini, who was arrested by the morality police for not wearing her headscarf properly. At least 92 people have been killed since September 16, according to the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights NGO. Tehran’s official tally says about 60 dead, including 12 members of the security forces.
Trudeau said the “barbaric Iranian regime that has committed murder and is imposing a reign of terror” must be held accountable. He also denounced Tehran’s “irresponsible disregard” for human rights.
“The Iranian regime is oppressive, theocratic and misogynistic,” Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said for her part.
In late September, Canada imposed sanctions on about 10 Iranian officials and entities, including the morality police. Other countries have also taken measures, mainly of an economic nature, such as the USA. Today, the State Department said it would continue to “coordinate” with US allies and partners to respond together to the “bloody crackdown” on protests and “state violence” against women.
“The Iranian government has now killed more than 100 people in this bloody crackdown,” US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said, citing humanitarian figures.
