London: Human chain in the British Parliament for the release of Assange

Supporters of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange formed a human chain outside Britain’s parliament, demanding a halt to the United States’ bid to extradite him to face criminal charges in American courts.

Hundreds of protesters, among whom was Jeremy Corbynthe former Labor leader, lined up in a line that stretched from the railings of the parliament fence to nearby Westminster Bridge on the opposite bank of the Thames.

Stella Assange, Assange’s wife, said the British government should speak to authorities in USA to stop the extradition proceedings, which started in 2019. “It has already been three and a half years. It is a stain on the United Kingdom and the Biden administration,” he stressed.

“Free Assange” and “Journalism is not a crime,” read the banners held by the protesters.

Assange supporters are also set to gather outside the Justice Department in Washington later today.

In the US, 51-year-old Assange is accused of 18 crimes, including espionage, because he posted secret diplomatic and military documents on the WikiLeaks website. His lawyers have appealed to Britain’s High Court, asking that the decision to extradite him to the US be overturned.
