The Ukrainians consider the recapture of Kherson a priority for strategic reasons

THE Ukraine recaptured 1,170 square kilometers of land in its area Peninsula after it launched its counterattack in late August, a military spokeswoman said today.

The Ukrainian armed forces quickly recaptured the territory around Kharkiv in the northeast, but counterattacking in the south to drive the Russians from the west bank of the Dnieper River is proving to be a more difficult task.

The representative of the military command of the south, Natalia Humeniuksaid that progress is being made on the Kherson front, but much still needs to be done to secure the lands recaptured by the Ukrainians.

“Work continues (…) clearing and stabilization operations, because the settlements we are entering contain many surprises left by the (Russian) invaders,” Humeniuk said on public television. “To date, since the beginning of the counterattack, more than 1,170 square kilometers have been liberated in the Kherson region,” he assured.

Ukrainian officials consider recapturing Kherson, a flat, rural region that Moscow captured in the first days of the invasion, a priority. Losses of territory in Kherson could threaten supply lines to the Crimean peninsula, further south, which Kiev has been seeking to return to Ukraine since Russia annexed it in 2014.
