Surovikin, 55, led the Russian military campaign in Syria in 2017, where he was accused of masterminding a bombing that destroyed much of the city of Aleppo.
Europe is watching with bated breath Putin’s next stepswhile there are intense fears of a generalization of the war after the announcement by the Belarusian Alexander Lukashenko of a joint action group with Russia in the east of Ukraine.
It is recalled that now the head of Russian operations in Ukraine is General Sergei Surovikin, a move that reveals Putin’s plan for “tough” responses on the front.
Surovikin, 55, led the Russian military campaign in Syria in 2017, where he was accused of masterminding a bombing that destroyed much of the city of Aleppo.
He is known in the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces as the “Armageddon General” because of his ruthless, harsh, unorthodox approach to military operations.
He has been the head of the Russian air force since 2017 and according to the British Ministry of Defense has a reputation as a corrupt and brutal general. “
Speaking at the start of a session of Russia’s Security Council, Putin said Moscow had launched missile attacks against Ukraine’s energy, military and communications infrastructure in retaliation for the bridge attack.
“If attempts to carry out terrorist attacks on our territory continue, Russia’s responses will be harsh and in scale will correspond to the level of threats posed to the Russian Federation. No one should have any doubts about that,” he added.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced that 84 missiles were fired, of which 41 were shot down.
“They want panic and chaos,” said Volodymyr Zelensky, in a video that appears to have been shot on the streets of Kyiv. Monday’s attacks took place at a time “specifically chosen to cause as much damage as possible… Why exactly such strikes? The enemy wants us to be afraid, he wants to make people run. But we can only run forward – and we prove it on the battlefield. We will continue like this.”
Zelensky once again appealed to the West for additional air defense. In a post on Twitter, Zelenskiy said he had spoken with Olaf Solz and Emmanuel Macron. With the French president, Zelensky said he discussed “strengthening our air defenses, the need for a tough European and international response, as well as increasing pressure on the Russian Federation.”
For his part, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said today: “The best response to Russian missile terrorism is to supply Ukraine with anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems. Protect the sky over Ukraine! This will protect our cities and people. This will protect Europe’s future. Evil must be punished.”
