Tragedy in Mexico: At least 49 migrants killed in road accident

by

At least 49 migrants, most of them believed to be from Honduras, were killed Thursday in a car crash involving a truck in southwestern Mexico, the Chiapas state prosecutor’s office said.

Another 37 people were injured, three of them in critical condition, in an accident near the state capital Tustla Gutierrez, according to the same source.

The governor of the state, Rutilio Escandon, expressed his “solidarity” with the victims.

The immigrants were crammed into the truck whose driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn, according to the first information given to the Mexican press by the Civil Protection.

“Responsibilities (for the accident) will be assigned as required by law,” the governor said.

The accident took place near the border with Guatemala, a gateway for immigrants who leave mainly from Central American countries (Honduras and El Salvador) and try to reach the United States.

Transporting them by truck is one of the most common methods used by traffickers.
