The US Department of State on Tuesday announced new sanctions against Taliban officials in retaliation for their treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan.

“Today, I am announcing restrictions on the granting of passport visas (…) to current and former members of the Taliban and others deemed responsible or complicit in the oppression of women and girls in Afghanistan through restrictive policies and violence,” he said in a press release. made public by the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, on the day that marked the tenth anniversary of the first celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child.

Girls’ education is an extremely sensitive issue in Afghanistan, a country with a majority Sunni population. The Taliban, who retook power on August 15, 2021 after the withdrawal of US troops, have banned secondary education (middle and high school) for girls. Female students, on the other hand, can go to universities, but their numbers are predicted to decrease over the years due to lack of access to secondary education.

A recent suicide bomber attack at an educational center for female and male students in the Afghan capital, Kabul, killed 53 people, including at least 46 girls and young women, according to the United Nations Support Mission in Afghanistan.
