Putin extends embargo on food imports from EU and other countries

Despite the ban on imports, products of Western origin are available in Russia, entering either thanks to its bypasses or by smugglers. On the black market, Western products are very expensive: Italian and French cheeses, for example, are both in high demand and exorbitantly priced.

The ban on food imports originating in European Union states and other countries has been extended until December 31, 2023, a government document on “special economic measures” aimed at guaranteeing the security of the Russian Federation shows.

The embargo, which has been in place since August 2014, covers dairy, meat, fruit and vegetables from EU member states and other targeted countries. This is a retaliatory measure against Western sanctions against Russia after the annexation of the Crimean peninsula and the outbreak of conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Tonnes of food from abroad have been destroyed as Russian authorities try to discourage black market trade. However, some consumers complain about the high prices and sometimes inferior quality of domestic food. Experts observe that the elimination of competition from abroad has led to the creation of monopolies and the increase in prices of foodstuffs produced in Russia.
