AMRAAM missiles, which will be delivered “in the coming weeks” to Kyiv and can be fired by the US-promised NASAMS air defense system, will be the first to be sent by London with the ability to shoot down cruise missiles, he said in a statement the British Ministry of Defence.

Britain will send Ukraine additional anti-aircraft missiles capable of shooting down Russian cruise missiles, the Ministry of Defense has announced.

The announcement comes as allies of Ukraine, who met in Brussels on Wednesday, expressed a desire to help Kyiv strengthen its anti-aircraft defenses as soon as possible, after a wave of intensive Russian bombardment of the country’s major cities on Monday and Tuesday.

AMRAAM missiles, which will be delivered “in the coming weeks” to Kyiv and can be fired by the US-promised NASAMS air defense system, will be the first to be sent by London with the ability to shoot down cruise missiles, he said in a statement the British Ministry of Defence.

“These missiles will help protect critical national infrastructure of Ukraine,” the statement said.

Additionally, London has assured that hundreds of additional missiles for air defense systems and hundreds of UAVs will be sent to support the intelligence-gathering capability of Kiev’s armed forces.

The UK will send 18 more cannons, which will add to the 64 already delivered.

“These weapons will help Ukraine defend its airspace from attack and strengthen its defenses together with the US NASAMS,” assured British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

The British announcement comes ahead of a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels today and as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calls for an anti-missile “shield” to be built over Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has assured that the procurement of systems capable of shooting down Russian missiles is a “priority”.
