Norway-Nobel Peace Prize: Physical presence award despite high Covid-19 percentages

by

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov, who were recognized for their struggle for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia, will receive their awards at a ceremony in Oslo today, despite high COVID ratings. -19 in Norway.

Journalists won the award at a time when free, independent and fact-based journalism is on fire, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in announcing the Peace Prize in October.

The ceremony at Oslo City Hall will take place normally, but will have fewer guests than originally planned due to government restrictions that came into force this week. Yesterday, Norway announced a record number of daily COVID-19 cases.

In Sweden, where infection rates are lower than in Norway, organizers canceled Nobel ceremonies in September with a physical presence for the second year in a row.

Instead, Nobel laureates in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Economics – prizes normally awarded in Sweden – received their diplomas and medals in their home countries, while traditional Nobel lectures were given online.

Resa and Muratov are the first journalists to receive the award after the German Karl von Osiecki, who was honored in 1935 for revealing his country’s secret post-war rearmament program.
