Zelensky noted that Russian forces have hit seven different locations in the last 48 hours. “Some of the missiles and drones were shot down, but unfortunately not all. Unfortunately, there are disasters and victims,” said the Ukrainian president.

The Ukrainian army is still in control of the strategically important city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, despite repeated Russian attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday, who admitted, however, that the situation in Donbass remains very difficult.

In a video message, Zelensky said Russian missiles and drones continue to pound Ukrainian cities, spreading death and destruction.

Although the Ukrainian army has recaptured thousands of square kilometers of territory thanks to a major counteroffensive it has launched in the east and south of the country, officials stress that progress by Kiev’s forces could slow as they begin to meet stronger resistance from the invaders.

Fighting continues unabated in the eastern provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk, which make up the larger industrial region of Donbas, on the border with Russia. Russian forces have repeatedly attempted to capture Bakhmut, which is located on a main arterial road leading to the cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

“The fighting continues in various areas of the front. The situation remains very difficult in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions”, said the president of Ukraine and added “the biggest difficulties are located in the direction of Bakhmut, as in the previous days. We hold our positions.”

For its part, the general staff of the National Defense of Ukraine said in a Facebook post that the Ukrainian army repelled 11 separate attacks by Russian invaders near the cities of Kramatorsk, Bakhmut and Avdifka (north of Donetsk).

Zelensky noted that Russian forces have hit seven different locations in the last 48 hours. “Some of the missiles and drones were shot down, but unfortunately not all. Unfortunately, there are disasters and victims,” said the Ukrainian president.

Kyiv said on Friday it expects advanced air defense systems from the United States and Germany this month.

Zelensky also claimed that nearly 65,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the invasion began on February 24, a figure far higher than Moscow’s official estimate (as of September 21) of 5,937 dead. Last August, the American Pentagon estimated that the Russian invaders numbered 70-80,000 casualties (referring to the sum of dead and wounded).
