The Prime Minister of the decentralized government of Scotland, Nicola Sterzion, warned that her country “may be beginning to see a potential tsunami of Omicron-type infections”.
Scotland has recorded 5,018 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a “rapid increase” from an average of 2,800 per day in the last 24 hours. Ms Sturgeon attributed the increase to the Omicron variant, which “could become the dominant variant in Scotland perhaps even as early as next week”.
According to Ms Sturgeon, the R rate of the coronavirus reproduction rate in Scotland could rise to 2, with cases of the new variant doubling every 2.16 to 2.66 days.
However, for the week until December 1, the R value in England remained stable at 0.9-1.1.
It is estimated that in the same week in England there was one body per 60 inhabitants, the same proportion as in the previous week.
Ms Sturgeon confirmed that the Scottish Government was urging citizens to cancel their Christmas parties, although not forcing them to do so.
This recommendation is contrary to the central government in Westminster for England, which calls on citizens not to cancel their plans.
However, Downing Street confirmed that this year’s staff Christmas party was canceled, in the wake of last year’s party scandal amid a ban.
