THE Daniel Redon Herreraor “Don Mario”, a Colombian drug lord, was sentenced yesterday Monday by a New York court to serve a sentence 35 years in prison and to pay a fine of $45 million, the US Department of Justice announced.
The former far-right paramilitary leader, 57, pleaded guilty last year. Among other things, he was accused of having imported dozens of tons of cocaine into American territory.
The court sentenced him to 35 years in prison for participating in criminal activities as a leader of the Clan del Golfo, the most powerful drug cartel in Colombia.
He was still sentenced 15 years in prison for “consisting and conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist organization, the United Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC),” a far-right paramilitary organization that transformed into the Klan, according to the Justice Department’s statement.
The two sentences will be merged, the same source clarified.
“Today (i.e. yesterday Monday) ended the criminal career of Redon Herrera”, the “once most feared narco-terrorist in Colombia”, assured US Attorney Brion Peace, always according to the press release of the Ministry of Justice.
