Kyiv requests intervention of the International Committee of the Red Cross for the Ukrainian prisoners

Ukrainians argue that the ICRC is not following its mission, which is to visit prisoners

Kyiv denounced its “inaction” today International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help the Ukrainian soldiers who remain prisoners of the Russians, whom the international organization has not yet been able to visit.

“Unfortunately in every exchange, we observe that the inaction of the ICRC has led to prisoners of war and civilians being held hostage to be tortured daily by starvation or electric shocks,” said Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian human rights official.

As he stated, the ICRC is not fulfilling its mission, which provides for visiting soldiers and civilians held captive in war zones.

The head of services of the Ukrainian presidency, Mr Andrei Germaksaid for his part that “Ukraine expects and demands from the ICRC the necessary determination to gain access to the Ukrainian prisoners in Olenivka”.

The sanitary conditions in this prison, located in the occupied by Russians side of Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine have been widely denounced by the UN, and Kyiv has repeatedly called for an ICRC team to go there.
