Britons are skipping meals in the face of soaring prices

According to a survey of 3,000 people, half of households in Britain cut back on their meals. At the same time, 80% of the participants in the research admit that they experience financial difficulties.

Millions of Britons are skipping meals because of a surge in UK prices, particularly food, which pushed inflation above 10% last month, research by Which? which is published today.

Half of households in Britain have cut back on their meals, reports Which?, which surveyed 3,000 people.

Almost the same percentage say they are finding it harder to eat well than before the crisis and are increasingly opting for pre-cooked meals to cut down on gas or electricity consumption.

80% of the people who participated in the survey admit that they experience financial difficulties. Many have made a decision that henceforth they will be deprived of various delicacies in order to be able to buy the essentials.

Britain’s consumer watchdog also warned on Wednesday that millions of households are at risk of falling into energy poverty, not being able to heat adequately this winter, after the new Chancellor of the Exchequer’s decision to significantly reduce the duration of the ceiling on the cost of energy.

Jeremy Hunt reversed much of the fiscal measures announced in late September by his predecessor Kwazi Kwarteng, mixing a massive subsidy for household and business energy spending with wide-ranging tax cuts.

The measures, which were to be financed with public debt and were not considered to be properly costed, caused a storm in the markets.

Mr Hunt cut support to households for energy costs to six months from two years, at a time when the price of natural gas has soared on a year-on-year basis, especially since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

At 10.1% year-on-year in September, inflation in Britain is the highest among the G7 countries and the highest the country has recorded in forty years.
