An 80-year-old man who parked illegally on the grounds of the federal Capitol in Washington and said he was there to deliver documents to the Supreme Court was arrested Wednesday after three guns were found in his vehicle, law enforcement agencies said.
Tony Payne, a resident of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, has been arrested and charged with bringing weapons onto the grounds of Congress, the US Capitol Police (USCP) explained in a press release. Two other occupants of the car, a man and a woman, were cited but not arrested.
Members of the USCP spotted Mr Payne’s white van parked illegally near the Supreme Court building at around 3.45pm. When approached, the three occupants assured officers they were there to deliver documents to America’s top judicial institution.
Mr. Payne informed officers that there were weapons inside the vehicle. In the search that followed, two pistols, a carbine, ammunition, containers and other items were found, according to the announcement.
The USCP says it arrests dozens of people each year for carrying guns on the grounds of the federal Capitol.
