What if Putin nukes Ukraine? – Simulation shows havoc

Four-minute animation aims to show ‘potentially catastrophic’ consequences – Predicts 34.1 million people would die within hours

What will happen if the Vladimir Putin press the nuke button? A terrifying simulation shows how a nuclear strike by Russia could trigger a deadly war 34 million people in just five hours.

Known as “Plan A”, the four-minute animation aims to present the “potentially catastrophic” consequences of a possible conflict between Russia and NATO countries.

It was developed by Princeton University researchers associated with the Program on Science and Global Security (SGS) and was originally released in 2017. However, the war in Ukraine has reignited discussions around the prospect of nuclear war.

Dr. Alex Glaser, one of the creators of Plan A, told Newsweek: “As far as anyone can tell, this is the most serious crisis with a possible nuclear dimension involving Russia and the United States/NATO since of the Cold War, even if the risk of a nuclear war is still considered “small” — as many analysts would argue”

“A crisis like the one we’re facing right now often leads to miscommunication between the parties, exacerbated by the fact that very few active lines of communication remain between Russia and the US/NATO.” he added.

The model—based on realistic data on nuclear force postures, targets, and causality estimates—predicts that 34.1 million people would die within hours.

The catastrophic conflict will leave another 55.9 million injured – figures that do not include subsequent deaths from nuclear fallout and other effects.

The nuclear war simulators they can seem scarybut can be used by governments to develop emergency plans and educate the public on how to survive an attack.

What the simulation shows

This simulation starts in the context of a conventional, non-nuclear conflict. Russia fires a warning shot from a base near Kaliningrad, on the Black Sea, to stop a US-NATO advance before they respond with a single, tactical airstrike.

Subsequently, Russia sends 300 warheads which are transported either by aircraft or by short-range missiles, to NATO bases and troops advancing in Europe.

The international military alliance it would then respond with about 180 nuclear aircraft.

At this stage, losses are expected to reach about 2.6 million people in the space of three hours and Europe is effectively destroyed.

Following this, NATO acts from the US continental fleet and nuclear submarines, launching a strategic nuclear strike of around 600 warheads.

Before striking and destroying its weapons systems, Russia launches nukes from missile silos and submarines. In this case the Plan predicts that the war phase will last 45 minutes and at least 3.4 million people would lose their lives.

In the final phase of the conflict, both sides target each other’s 30 most populous cities and economic centers—deploying 5 to 10 nukes for each—to try to prevent each side from recovering from the war. In such a case, at least 85.3 million people will die within 45 minutes.
