Olaf Solz will visit China at the beginning of November

by

The German Chancellor is likely to become the first leader of a Western country to visit China since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic. His first trip to Asia was to Japan, a member of the G7.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will visit China, accompanied by a delegation of businessmen, in early November, the head of the German government confirmed yesterday after the Summit in Brussels.

Mr. Soltz had been planning this visit, his first to the world’s second-largest economy, for some time. That it is scheduled to take place two weeks before the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, seems “quite practical”, he commented, although the visit could also take place after the summit.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden are also expected to attend the summit. It is not yet clear whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will be present.

Olaf Solz is likely to become the first Western leader to visit China since the novel coronavirus pandemic broke out. His first trip to Asia was to Japan, a member of the G7.

Two of Mr Scholz’s predecessors (Angela Merkel, Gerhard Schroeder) had also visited China. The German chancellor also plans to visit Vietnam and Singapore next month before the G20 summit.
