The former… next (?) Prime Minister of Britain is back on the Island and appears ready to officially enter the race to succeed Liz Truss

O Boris Johnson has secured 100 supporters and may take part in the vote to succeed Liz Truss as Prime Minister of Britain, according to a post made on Twitter by Tim Stipeman, responsible for political reporting at the newspaper “The Sunday Times”citing an unnamed source close to the former British prime minister.

Boris Johnson is back in Britain as he mounts a bold bid to win a second term as prime minister, just weeks after he was forced to resign. Johnson was booed by some passengers on the flight to Britain, according to a Sky News reporter on the flight.

Some of his conservative colleagues, however, warn that Johnson’s return could cause even more political chaos.

The contenders for the prime ministership, to replace Liz Trussfollowing her dramatic resignation on Thursday after just six weeks in office, have engaged in a veritable race to influence the Conservative Party this weekend in order to get nominations in place before Monday’s deadline.

Johnson, who was vacationing in Caribbean when Tras resigned and has made no public statement about whether he will run for his old seat, he has the support of dozens of Conservative MPs. He needs to collect 100 signatures to join the process.

Trade Secretary James Dandridge confirmed yesterday that Johnson had told him he was “ready” and the former leader would travel to Britain again today.

Former Defense Secretary Penny Mordant she was the first candidate to officially declare her intention to run for the next Tory party leader, but Johnson and Rishi Sunak, who was once his finance minister, are seen as her main potential rivals ahead of her vote next week. Sunak is the first candidate to collect the required number of 100 MPs-supporters, according to British media.

For some Conservative MPs, Johnson is a vote-winner who can resonate across the country not only with his visibility but also with his characteristic optimism. For others, Johnson is a toxic personality, and the question is whether he can to convince the dozens of MPs who abandoned him that he is now the person who can unite the party and change its course.

Former Conservative leader William Hague said yesterday that Johnson’s return was possibly the worst idea he had heard in nearly half a century as a member of the party. He said this would send the Conservatives into a “circle of death”.
