The former Minister of Finance, Rishi Sunak, officially announced today, Sunday, that he is running for the leadership of the Conservative Party and the British Prime Ministershipfollowing the resignation of Liz Truss.
He had previously met with Boris Johnson to avoid a “rift” within the Conservatives.
Sunak has garnered the support of over 100 Tory MPs.
In his tweet announcing his candidacy, Sunak wrote “the UK is a great country but we are facing a deep economic crisis”.
Sunak promises that he can “fix our economy, unite our party and deliver for our country” and that although “the challenges we face now are even greater” than those posed by the pandemic, “the opportunities – if we make the right choice – they’re great.”
