Battersea Power Station was inaugurated in the 1930s and later expanded to take on its distinctive four-stack form on the banks of the Thames
Almost 40 years have passed since Battersea Power Station was decommissioned but architectural firm WilkinsonEyre have finally completed its redevelopment.
The iconic building now houses more than 100 stores, 46,000 square meters of Apple offices and 254 apartments.
Designed by British architect Giles Gilbert Scott, Battersea Power Station was inaugurated in the 1930s and later expanded to take on its distinctive four-stack form on the banks of the Thames.
It was decommissioned between 1975 and 1983. The building stood empty for nearly 30 years before WilkinsonEyre began its redevelopment as the centerpiece of a new commercial and residential neighborhood in Battersea.
“The main architectural response was to introduce a rich mix of uses that make good use of the spaces,” explained Sebastien Ricard, managing director at the architectural firm. “At the same time, we want visitors to be constantly aware of the historical web and of being in a unique space,” he added, speaking to Dezeen.
