Iran: Security forces open fire on protesters gathered at Makhsa Amini’s tomb – Internet access interrupted

“Riot police fired on ceremony attendees gathered at the cemetery,” Hengaw said on Twitter.

Iranian security forces opened fire Wednesday on protesters who gathered in the hometown of Mahsha Amini to honor her, 40 days after her death, according to witnesses and an NGO.

“Security forces used tear gas and they opened fire against people in Zidan Square in Saghez,” Hengaw, a Norwegian-based Iranian Kurdish rights group, said on Twitter.

“Riot police opened fire on ceremony attendees who had gathered at the cemetery to mark the end of Masha’s 40-day mourning…dozens have been arrested,” an eyewitness told Reuters.

Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency also confirmed that clashes had broken out.

“A limited number of those who attended the memorial service for Makhsa Amini clashed with police forces on the outskirts of Saghez and dispersed. After the scattered clashes, Internet access to Sagez has been shut down for security reasons“, the agency reported, adding that those gathered were around 10,000.

Defying heightened security measures, worshipers gathered at the cemetery in Iranian Kurdistan where Amini is buried to honor her. According to human rights activists, the security forces had warned the young woman’s parents not to organize any ceremony in her memory, especially at her grave, going so far as to threaten “the life of their son”. Nevertheless, dozens of residents entered the city today, walking through fields and driving by car or motorbike, according to photos posted by Norway-based Hengaw.

The 22-year-old Kurdish woman died on September 16, three days after she was arrested in Tehran by morality police for not wearing her headscarf properly.

Since the crackdown on protests that broke out after Amini’s death across Iran, at least 141 people have been killed, including children — 23 or 29 based on different sources — according to a new tally announced by Iran Human Rights.
