Iran at the center of the talks between Biden and Herzog at the White House

Biden sought to negotiate Iran’s return to the international agreement on its nuclear program (JPCOA) from which the US withdrew under President Donald Trump in 2018.

The presidents of the USA and Israel, Joe Biden and Isaac Herzog, had talks today that focused mainly on the issue of Iran, Tehran’s nuclear program and the supply of Iranian weapons to Russia.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Herzog said both he and Biden would attend the COP27 climate change summit hosted in Egypt next month. “One event that you and I will be participating in, Mr. President, with leaders from around the world, is COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in a few weeks,” he noted.

Biden is expected to attend the B20 summit in Bali, Indonesia in November. A White House spokesman declined to comment on the president’s schedule.

Biden sought to negotiate Iran’s return to the international agreement on its nuclear program (JPCOA) from which the US withdrew under President Donald Trump in 2018.

But last week the White House said it was putting diplomacy aside for now and accused Tehran of supplying Russia with drones used in the war in Ukraine.

After the meeting, Herzog told reporters that he discussed with Biden the issue, namely that Iran is sending Russia weapons that are killing Ukrainian citizens. He added that they also discussed Iran’s nuclear program and the Iranian authorities’ crackdown on protests.

The Israeli president recalled that today marks 40 days since the death of the young Iranian Mahsha Amini, after she was arrested by the morality police for not observing the strict dress code. Her death sparked protests that are still ongoing in many cities.

“This is an example of how Iran crushes its own citizens while advancing (its) nuclear weapons program and supplying (Russia) with lethal weapons that are killing innocent civilians in Ukraine,” he said.

Biden, for his part, commented on the signing of an agreement between Israel and Lebanon to define their maritime borders. The US helped negotiate this agreement. “I think it’s a historic intersection. It took a lot of courage on your part to take that step and it took guts, and I think it took tenacious diplomacy to pull it off,” the US president said.

On his two-day visit to Washington, which began Tuesday, Herzog also met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
