The US Embassy in South Africa is warning against a threatened act of terrorism

The US embassy in South Africa issued an emergency bulletin on Wednesday warning against a threatened terrorist attack the day after Saturday aimed at “large gatherings” in a neighborhood in the northern sector of Johannesburg, which the South African government, contacted by AFP, did not confirm. has neither confirmed nor denied so far.

“The US government has received information that terrorists may be planning to carry out an attack targeting large gatherings (…) in the greater Shandon area,” a popular commercial district north of the historic center of Johannesburg, according to the text posted on the website of the embassy and immediately went viral on social networking sites.

“There is no further information on the time, method or target of the possible attack,” the warning added, adding that diplomatic personnel were advised to avoid crowds and gatherings in the suburb this weekend (October 29-30).

“We have nothing more to add to what the warning contains,” embassy spokesman David Feldman was limited to telling AFP.

South African government and foreign ministry spokesmen declined to confirm or comment on the warning.

More than 1,000 South African troops have been operating since July 2021 in neighboring Mozambique, where they are helping authorities deal with jihadist groups that have been wreaking havoc over the past five years, killing some 4,300 people and displacing more than a million residents.

On Monday, Western embassies, including that of the US, advised their nationals to also avoid travel to Nigeria, citing an increased risk of terrorist acts.
