Electoral thriller looms in Brazil: Bolsonaro slashes Lula’s lead in polls

by

In an MDA poll on behalf of the transport workers’ confederation (CNT), Lula secures 51.1% of voting intentions compared to Bolsonaro’s 48.9%.

An electoral thriller is predicted in Brazil, after a poll hours before the polls opened gave a narrow lead (within the margin of statistical error) to the center-left former president Luis Inacio da Silva over the current head of state, far-right Jair Bolsonaro.

In particular, in an MDA poll on behalf of the transport workers’ confederation (CNT), Lula secures 51.1% of voting intentions against Bolsonaro’s 48.9%.

The MDA poll’s ratings in the first round of the presidential election proved to be closer to the ballot box’s verdict, with most companies underestimating Bolsonaro and discounting a Lula triumph.

The majority of opinion polls show Lula as the favorite – but not undisputed – for Brazil’s presidency, potentially completing a spectacular return to the political limelight after being released from prison by the country’s Supreme Court after an earlier corruption conviction .

However, Bolsonaro defied poll predictions in the first round of the Oct. 2 presidential election, and political analysts stress that the ballot box’s verdict cannot be discounted.

In an AtlasIntel poll, however, Lula still maintains a six-point lead. AtlasIntel analysts attribute this to the support of supporters of centrist Senator Simone Tembet, who came third in the first round of the presidential election.

Bolsonaro finished his election campaign in the state of Minas Gerais, where he was deified by motorcyclists. Lula spoke to supporters on a central boulevard in Sao Paulo after earlier telling foreign reporters that his opponent was unfit to govern.

In their phone call on Friday, the two “glamorists” exchanged accusations and repeatedly refused to answer each other’s questions.

Bolsonaro began the debate by denying reports that he might delink the minimum wage from inflation, announcing instead that he plans to raise it to 1,400 reais (about 260 euros) if re-elected, something not included in his government’s 2023 budget.
