Thirty in critical condition – ‘Many people rescued and some missing’, local official says
At least 40 people have been killed and 30 are in critical conditionfollowing the tragedy that took place today in the city of Morbi, Gujarat, when a suspension bridge collapsed across the river Machu in the city of Morbi, Gujarat.

The historic bridge, 230 meters long, it was built during the British colonial era, in the 19th century. It had been closed for maintenance for six months and reopened five days ago.

It is estimated that more than 400 people were on the bridge in the town of Morbi at the time as reported by the local television channel Zee News.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in his native Gujarat on a three-day visit, said he had instructed the state’s chief minister to immediately mobilize teams for the rescue operation.
