First crisis in the government of the British prime minister Rishi Sunak: Interior Minister Suella Braverman is under fire Monday for both her handling of the influx of illegal immigrants into the country and her controversial stay in the ministry.

The 42-year-old ultra-conservative daughter of immigrants who some Brits call phlegmatic “Cruella”, as she has stated that it is her “dream” to see irregular migrants deported from Britain to Rwanda – she is faced with the harsh reality.

Despite promises that Britain will be able to better manage its borders thanks to Brexit, the country is facing an unprecedented influx of irregular migrants crossing the Channel. Almost 40,000 have made this dangerous journey since the beginning of the year.

Almost 1,000 migrants arrived in Britain on Saturday alone, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Added to this was the overcrowded and unsanitary migrant reception center in Manston, south-east England.

The situation there is “totally unacceptable”, Conservative MP Roger Gale told the BBC. “There are just too many people there and we should never have allowed this to happen,” he added.

For his part, the independent chief inspector for Borders and Immigration, David Neal, he spoke of “particularly deplorable” conditions in this reception center.

Initially, this center was created to offer accommodation to approximately 1,500 immigrants and for a period of less than 24 hours. However, they live there now more than 4,000 people, while a family from Afghanistan told Neil that they have been at the center for 32 days.

The inspector told a parliamentary committee that among the approximately 11,000 people who have passed through the center in the past two months there have been four cases of diphtheria.

“Whoever is responsible, whether it’s the previous home secretary or the current one, must be held to account,” Gale stressed.

Overcrowding in Manston worsened after 700 people were temporarily moved there on Sunday after the migrant reception center where they were staying in Dover was targeted by a Molotov cocktail attack, leaving two people slightly injured.

The suspect in the attack was found dead at a gas station, according to police, with the press reporting that he had committed suicide.

Braverman spoke of the “disturbing” events in a tweet, the only public comment she has made in recent days.

The Home Office chief quit Liz Truss’s government on October 19 after admitting that he sent an official document from personal e-mail. But after his appointment as prime minister, Sunak gave her the ministry again, despite the reactions.

Environment Secretary Mark Spencer today admitted there were “huge difficulties” and that migrants needed to be treated “humanely”.

In an open letter published today more than 120 associations and non-governmental organizations called on Braverman to create safe routes for asylum seekers and respect international law.
