Parliamentary elections in Israel: The next Knesset will likely be even more right-wing

Benjamin Netanyahu’s return is seen as likely as Israelis go to the polls for the fifth time in three and a half years

Israel’s roughly 6.8 million voters go to the polls today, for the fifth time in three and a half years, in crucial parliamentary elections that could mark the dramatic return of “Bibi,” the former prime minister. Benjamin Netanyahu, in the foreground and in office.

His faction, the Likud (right), may become the ruling party in the country again, according to opinion polls.

But it remains to be seen whether and to what extent the right-wing alliance with ultra-Orthodox Zionist parties can secure a majority of seats in the Knessetthe Israeli Parliament.

Through Twitter, Mr. Netanyahu warned yesterday that Likud is showing a downward trend in the latest polls, calling on his supporters to go to the polls and assuring that victory is possible.

In today’s elections—the 25th since the founding of the country—forty parties are participating. About a third of these factions are expected to exceed the threshold of 3.25% of the vote required to elect (4) members to the Israeli national delegation.

The first predictions based on exit polls from the polling stations are expected to be made public around 21:00 (local time; 22:00 Greek time). The final result is not expected to be announced before the day after tomorrow Thursday, however.

Some 18,000 police officers will be deployed to guarantee the security of the vote.

Some polls give the pro-Bibi camp potentially as many as 60 of the 120 Knesset seats.

In this case, a new stalemate would arise with the rival faction under the current prime minister, Yair Lapid. His faction, the Party for the Future (center), may become the second strongest in parliament.

The camp against “Bibi” is particularly heterogeneous, moving along the spectrum from the left to the right, with a unifying element being the opposition to Mr. Netanyahu’s return to the prime ministership.
