16 non-governmental organizations request in a letter to the Ministries of Migration and Asylum and Foreign Affairs, the European Commission and the Asylum Service to abolish the designation of Turkey as a safe third country for asylum seekers who come to Greece.

The organizations note that in its recent report on Turkey, the European Commission “makes extensive reference to the inability of refugees to access international protection, violations of the principle of non-refoulement and violations of human rights in detention, as well as the broader slide of the rule of law in Turkey”.

In view of the mandatory, according to the law, annual review of the designation of Turkey as a safe third country, the organizations call for its immediate abolition and the cessation of rejection of asylum applications as inadmissible under the concept of a safe third country.

The letter is co-signed by the organizations ‘Arsis, Danish Refugee Council, Hellenic Refugee Council, Metadrasis, Symbiosis-School of Political Studies/Council of Europe Network, Support for Refugees in the Aegean, ECHO100Plus, Equal Rights Beyond Borders, Fenix, HIAS Greece, HumanRights360, International Rescue Committee, Legal Center Lesvos, Refugee Legal Support, Safe Passage International and Terre des hommes Hellas.
