At least four workers died and four others were injured when gas exploded in a coal mine gallery in central Kazakhstan, the Emergencies Ministry of the largest Central Asian country said today.
“In Shakhtinsk, at the Lenin mine, owned by ArcelorMittal, a sudden gas release during the drilling of a drainage shaft resulted in the death of four workers,” ministry spokesman Ruslan Imankulov told AFP. According to him, others “tfour workers are hospitalized, one is still being sought and 106 were evacuated” from the mine.
The governor in the district Karaganda, industrial center rich in raw materials, went to the scene of the accident, a spokesman announced, adding that the police had begun an investigation. Kazakhstan, a former Soviet republic, Central Asia’s largest economy, has large deposits of oil, gas, as well as uranium, manganese, iron, chromium and coal.
