Friend of Dubai’s Princess Latifah accuses UAE of torture, kidnapping

“Today I begin my fight for justice for what I suffered while trying to help my friend Latifah,” he tweeted.

The Finnish friend of Princess Latifah, the daughter of the ruler of Dubai, with whom she was arrested on a yacht while helping her flee the United Arab Emirates, announced today that she has filed a lawsuit in Germany for “torture and kidnapping”.

In March 2018, Princess Latifah, daughter of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, attempted to flee the Emirates on a yacht, along with Tiina Jauhiainen, her capoeira coach. But on the night of March 4-5, their boat was spotted by the Indian Navy and towed back to the Emirates.

Jauhiainen claims she was “arbitrarily arrested and tortured by Emirati security forces working with the Indian Navy”. She also claims she was interrogated for hours, without a lawyer present, and forced to sign a confession by Emirati authorities accusing her of “kidnapping” the princess.

“Today I begin my fight for justice for what I suffered while trying to help my friend Latifah,” he tweeted.

“My lawyers have filed a lawsuit in Germany, asking the prosecution to investigate who is responsible, including the ruler of Dubai and the head of Interpol, (Ahmed Nasser) al-Raishi,” he added.

A lawyer for the Finnish coach, Elisabeth Baier, said the lawsuit was based on the principle of international jurisdiction, which allows a state’s judicial authorities to prosecute perpetrators of crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide, wherever they were committed. “We hope that German legislation will help protect torture victims and allow them to seek justice by closing Germany’s doors to those who have committed” these crimes, he added.

The federal prosecutor’s office was unable to confirm whether it had received the lawsuit.

Princess Latifah said last February, in a statement seen by AFP, that she was “very well” and asked the media to respect her privacy.

The High Court in London, appealed to by the sixth wife of the Dubai ruler after fleeing to the British capital in 2019, concluded that Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum had “consistently demonstrated coercive and manipulative behavior towards members of his family who he considers that they were acting against his will.” French justice, for its part, launched an investigation at the end of March against the head of Interpol, who is from the UAE, for “complicity in torture”, following the complaints submitted by two British women.
